French diplomat (1805–1894) who spearheaded the project to build the Suez Canal. Original oversized 6.75 x 9.75 cabinet photo by A. Gerschel of Paris, signed in the lower border in black ink, “Ferd. De Lesseps,” adding a difficult to decipher line under his signature. In very good to fine condition, with some scattered light surface marks and impressions to image and some light soiling and dampstaining to lower border.
